Man City's Kevin De Bruyne upbeat despite first Premier League defeat

Manchester City forward Kevin De Bruyne is confident the team will return to winning ways providing they continue to create chances. City's impressive start to the campaign was ended in the last week with home defeats to Juventus in the Champions League and West Ham in the Premier League. Manuel Pellegrini's men had not even conceded a goal in their five games prior to that and they will not want the blip to develop into anything more serious. City did create a number of chances in both losses, and looked like they would come back in the second half of Saturday's 2-1 home defeat against the Hammers. And the performance has given City's recent £54m arrival cause for optimism ahead the League Cup trip to Sunderland on Tuesday.

Mourinho: No splits in Chelsea squad

Jose Mourinho accepts his Chelsea side has lost confidence during a wretched start to the season but has again insisted there are no fractures in relationships at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues’ worst start in 29 years has led to speculation of rifts within the camp, which Mourinho has strenuously denied, while Eden Hazard has struggled to reach the same heights this term.

The Belgian was the Premier League champions’ most startling player last season and remains the competition’s leading performer ahead of Saturday’s clash with Arsenal, according to his manager.

“He’s the best player in England,” said Mourinho.

“He is the best and he will be the best again. I don’t know if it is tomorrow or if it is next week.”

The mood has improved at Chelsea since Wednesday night’s Champions League win over Maccabi Tel Aviv, but Mourinho is adamant the talk of a crisis is wrong ahead of the visit of long-time rival Arsene Wenger.

Mourinho listed a series of headlines – some of which have appeared in recent weeks and others to illustrate his reaction – and again denied Steven Gerrard’s suggestion of a fallout with captain John Terry.

“I don’t have any problem with any one of my players,” Mourinho said.

“Normally when bad results happen the first thing that comes into your laptops, iPads and pens is to find a dramatic story: ‘Somebody punch somebody in the dressing room’, ‘The manager doesn’t want to speak with this guy’.

“‘Diego Costa fought with John Terry and before they start the fight they brought a translator for them to understand each other in the fight, because Diego cannot speak English and John cannot speak Spanish’.

“‘They organise like Far West duels – at this time we are going to fight, bring a translator to help us’.

“You (the media) always go in this direction, which is funny. The other direction you don’t go is the direction which is real.

“You lose matches, you are affected, you lose confidence, you don’t want the ball.”

Gerrard’s comments came during his role as a BT Sport pundit for the Maccabi Tel Aviv tie, which began with a Hazard penalty which he blazed over.

“Maybe it was an agreement he did with some sponsor to promote the Rugby World Cup,” added Mourinho, who is happy for Hazard to continue spot-kick duties.

“He’s the best penalty taker in this country too. He is my first option.”

Based on previous comments made by Mourinho, a handshake is likely to be offered to Wenger pre-match.

The Frenchman, who shoved Mourinho in last October’s clash at Stamford Bridge, evaded his rival at Wembley when finally ending his 13-match winless run in the Community Shield.

Mourinho was coy on the subject.

“I don’t think it’s important now and I don’t think tomorrow people is focused on that. I think people is focused on what happens on the pitch,” Mourinho said.

Chelsea are 17th in the standings after their miserable start of four points from five matches, 11 adrift of leaders Manchester City.

But Mourinho is ignoring everything other than the Gunners.

“If we are looking to the table, I don’t think that helps,” he added.

“It’s a match I want to isolate from every possible context. It’s just Chelsea-Arsenal and it’s a match that we want to win. If it’s a pre-season friendly against Arsenal, we want to win. Community Shield, the same.”

Petr Cech returns after leaving for North London following 11 years of sterling service at Chelsea.

Mourinho added: “Arsenal goalkeeper until the game ends. When the game ends, if he wants to come to our dressing room, the door is open for him.”

John Obi Mikel and captain Terry are the only survivors from Mourinho’s first spell at the club.

Terry played every minute in the top flight last season but has been less in favour this term, although Mourinho maintains he is a key ally.

“I trust him as always and he’s one of my men,” Mourinho added.

United make Depay approach

Depay is the Eredivisie’s leading goalscorer and scored in the 4-1 win over Heerenveen on Saturday as Phillip Cocu’s men sealed the league title for the first time in seven seasons.

Liverpool and Tottenham have been linked with the 21-year-old, but PSV technical director Marcel Brands has revealed United have made an initial approach.

"We have had a telephone call from them about him," Brands said on Dutch television.

"But no talks have been held yet. There are several top clubs who have expressed an interest."

Brands added Depay, who has scored 20 league goals this season, would cost more than the £14.5m Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur reportedly bid for the striker.

"It will be much higher than the offer from Tottenham Hotspur," Brands added. "He will be very expensive."

Cocu said he expects Depay, who played in last year's World Cup in Brazil, to leave in the summer, along with fellow Dutch international midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

"The chance is really good that they'll both go," Cocu said. "But I do hope we'll be able to keep the rest of the team. A few mutations are not so bad but there must not be too many."

Right-back Raven's goal three minutes from the end of extra time gaveCaley Thistle a 3-2 win over 10-man Celtic.

"Raven's more defensive. I felt there was never going to be a better chance to beat Celtic, I didn't want to go to penalties," Hughes told BBC Scotland.

"Fortunately I didn't do it and David Raven came up with the goods."

Inverness were trailing 1-0 when Josh Meekings handled the ball in the box, an incident missed by referee Steven McLean.

Hughes admitted Meekings should have conceded a penalty and been sent off, but feels the furore has "taken a shine off what we did".

He added: "I said to them at half-time 'Our name's on the cup', our name was 100% on that cup with that kind of luck we carried in the first half.

"We matched Celtic, tactically we were spot on, and everybody's forgetting we scored two goals in open play. Not many teams do that against Celtic."

Celtic opened the scoring through Virgil van Dijk but Greg Tansey levelled from the penalty spot after the Parkhead side had goalkeeper Craig Gordon sent off.

Edward Ofere put Caley Thistle ahead and, after John Guidetti levelled, Raven grabbed a late winner.

"It's no surprise to me because the boys have had a wonderful season and we've had to put up with a lot," said Hughes.

"We've lost our inspirational skipper in Richie Foran. We had to cash in on Billy McKay, our top goalscorer.

"It just seems to galvanise us and we keep going."

Hughes fears he will lose "four or five players" after the final at Hampden on 30 May, including Aberdeen-bound Graeme Shinnie.

The Caley Thistle boss said his Aberdeen counterpart Derek McInnes "must have been sitting rubbing his hands", adding 23-year-old left-back Shinnie is "a machine".

"I've tipped him eventually to get in that Scotland set-up," he said. " I know there's a lot of good ones in front of him but he's a fantastic footballer, great engine, a real good footballer with a great belief.

"We're going to lose a few next year, but I just hope getting into the Scottish Cup final helps us along in terms of the budget."

Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge a doubt for FA Cup semi-final

Brendan Rodgers hopes striker Daniel Sturridge will not miss Liverpool's FA Cup semi-final clash with Aston Villa on Sunday.

Sturridge was not part of the Reds squad for the Monday Night Football meeting with Newcastle United as he was feeling the after-effects of a knock he suffered in the quarter-final replay against Blackburn.

The England international has endured an injury-plagued campaign and only recently returned from a lay-off of nearly five months.

Rodgers told Sky Sports before the game that he would monitor Sturridge over the rest of the week, but his comments after the game were a little more positive.

The Liverpool boss said: "He will hopefully be okay for the weekend. I will know more in the week.

"He feels reasonably fine so we are hoping by the middle of the week we will have an indication where he is at."

Rodgers was guarded about the availability of another striker, Mario Balotelli, who missed the Newcastle game as he continues to battle an illness.

He added: "Mario is still ill. He was not quite fit enough (to face Newcastle). He has had on and off sickness issues."

And Rodgers expects defender Mamadou Sakho to miss 'three or four weeks' with a hamstring injury.

The 25-year-old Frenchman was forced off in the first half at Blackburn and had already been ruled out of the Newcastle game - he could also now miss the Villa tie as well as Premier League encounters with West Brom, Hull and QPR.
